The story
The hotel was raised in 1964 inside the Montazah gardens to house the Arab heads of state at the summit held in Alexandria — a building for a political occasion before it became a public hotel.
Its architecture is modern in the manner of the 1960s: a low horizontal block following the line of the shore, deliberately not competing in height with the royal palace behind it, with nearly every room opening onto the bay.
It stands inside the garden wall, so reaching it means passing the Montazah gates: part of the royal site rather than a building apart from it.
