The story
The Maamoura beaches run along the eastern corniche in an unbroken row of leased and public shores, each numbered with its own crowd: quiet family beaches in the morning that swimming clubs take over, and others known for their evening bustle.
Behind them lies the Maamoura public garden — green lawns, small fairground rides and shaded seats — once part of the royal family’s estate before opening to everyone.
In season — June to September — the area’s population temporarily multiplies and the corniche becomes the longest promenade in the east of the city: corn and sweet-potato carts, anglers on the rocks, and beaches whose lights burn past midnight.
