The windmill stands in El Mandara Bahari. According to the newspaper Sout Al Omma, Mohamed Ali Pasha ordered it built in 1807 to make grinding grain easier. It is a cylindrical tower of white stone with circular wooden ties in its walls to ease the load on the stone courses, a conical wooden cap, three windows and an inner half-round stair of 37 steps.
The windmill was registered as a monument in 1967 by decree no. 113, and it appears in the 1954 film “Athar fi al-Rimal” (Footprints in the Sand).
In 2017 the Ministry of Antiquities confirmed that neither the windmill nor its protected zone had been encroached on, and that the building work that had caused concern lay outside the zone. It is not the windmill inside the Montazah Gardens, which was restored in the gardens’ redevelopment.
