The Abu Qir line was a suburban railway linking Misr Station in central Alexandria with Abu Qir station at the city’s far north-east; its stations in the district included El Mandara, Montazah, Maamoura, Toussoun and Abu Qir.
On 3 January 2024 the Ministry of Transport announced that the line would stop from 5 January in two stages, first from Misr Station to Sidi Gaber and then from Abu Qir to Montazah, to build the first phase of the Alexandria Metro: 21.7 kilometres and 20 stations from Abu Qir station to Misr Station. On 1 February 2024 the national railways stopped the trains between Abu Qir and Montazah, and the governorate laid on 13 bus routes in the train’s place.
In May 2026 the head of the National Authority for Tunnels, Major General Tarek Gouily, said the Alexandria Metro’s trial running would begin in March 2027.
